| 摘要 | This article provides information on the white elephants of Burma. In ancient pre-Hindu, pre-Buddhist times, white elephants were associated with rain clouds and were a symbol of life and prosperity. Elephants were then incorporated into Hindu mythology. Most white elephant experts agree that in order for a white elephant to be genuine it has to have four toenails instead of five, the skin has to turn red, not black when sprayed with water, tail and trunk should be straight and long, eyes must have yellow irises enclosed by red rigs. The official government newspaper New Light of Myanmar, has predicted that the country's white elephants herald a new era of prosperity. Visitors can see the country's three white elephants at a special enclosure near the new pagoda at Yangon's airport. The animals are guarded by soldiers.
