| 摘要 | The article describes the business environment and population diversity in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Once a haven for discrete, white, male entrepreneurs, the city has reinvented itself as a forward-looking place to do business. Halifax's 6.1% unemployment rate (as of January 2005) is the envy of Montreal and Toronto. A recent survey by Manpower Inc. concluded Halifax's employers were among the most optimistic in the country when it comes to hiring new staff. With a population of 370,000, Halifax is only Canada's 13th-largest city. But, as home to 40% of Nova Scotians and 16% of Atlantic Canadians, it's one of the few growth spots in a region that is losing people at an alarming rate. What's the allure? A swath of sexy new industries--offshore energy, IT and film--that are helping put the city on the map. In part, the new faces are just a reflection of what's happening here. Atlantic Canada may lag the country as a destination of choice for immigrants. But the problem isn't nearly as acute in Halifax, which, during the first six months of 2004, attracted more newcomers than Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island combined. Make no mistake: no one is ever going to confuse Halifax with the ethnic melting pots of Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. Yet any visitor to suburban communities is struck by the sizable Asian and South Asian populations--and, perhaps, can appreciate why Arabic is the province's third-most-popular tongue (after English and French). Halifax's Buddhists are behind everything from coffee shops and bookstores to think-tanks. |
