| 摘要 | This article provides information on the flag of Japan. The Japanese flag is commonly known as the hinomaru (sun-disc) or nisshoki (which literally means rising-sun flag) and consists of a large red disc set centrally upon a white background. The red disc has been used as an imperial badge since the 14th century, and was displayed on folding fans carried by samurai involved in local feuds. It continued to be used on warring ships throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, and eventually became regarded as the national flag in 1868 after the Meiji Restoration. However, it was not formally recognized until 1999. The white symbolizes honesty and purity, while the red disc represents the sun. Legend has it that the flag originated from the Mongol invasions of Japan, when the Buddhist priest Nicheren presented a sun disc to the shogun. The priest believed that it would help the shogun defeat the Mongols and save Japan, and the sun has since become a symbol of the country's independence. |
