| 摘要 | This dissertation examines the global expansion of Tibetan Buddhism in the late 20th century and its impact on Tibetan exiles' efforts to reproduce their culture in their South Asian diaspora. By tracing the ways in which non-Tibetan followers of Tibetan Buddhism have become stakeholders in Tibetan society, I demonstrate how Tibetan refugees have skillfully adapted to the experience of exile, while also showing how the interaction of Tibetans and non-Tibetans is producing new hybrid forms of Tibetan Buddhism. This cultural hybridity emerges from Tibet's historical position as an icon of otherness in the discursive spaces of Tibet's Western and Chinese interlocutors. I begin (Chapters 1 & 2) by outlining the emergent “global mandala” of transnational Tibetan Buddhism and summarizing relevant historical background, including the social organization of premodern Tibet, Tibet's relationship with imperial China, and the history of Western ideas of “fantastic Tibet.” Chapter 3 describes the emergence of the Boudhanath neighborhood of Kathmandu as a Buddhist boomtown that reflects the interrelationship of Tibetan exiles, Himalayan Buddhists, and Western and Chinese converts. Chapter 4 describes the rapidly growing popularity of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan. This growth reflects the longstanding Chinese fascination with Tibetan esoteric power, the recent emergence of globalized forms of Tibetan Buddhism, and the complex political history between Tibet and Taiwan. Chapter 5 analyzes an entirely new kind of Tibetan Buddhist institution, the Maitreya Project: the effort by a transnational Tibetan Buddhist organization to construct the world's tallest statue in a small village in rural India. Chapter 6 examines the question of identity, with particular attention to the Tibetan exiles' system of identity cards, the struggles over the recognition of the Panchen Lama and Karmapa reincarnations, and the longing of some non-Tibetans to actually be Tibetan. Chapter 7 considers the role that non-Tibetans are playing in the transformation of Tibetan Buddhism, with particular attention to the issue of full ordination for nuns, the dispute over the deity Dorje Shugden, and the tension between modernist and traditionalist understandings of Buddhism. The dissertation is based on four years of multi-sited fieldwork in Nepal, India, Taiwan, Tibet, and the United States. |
