| 摘要 | Based within the work and methodology of Eric Voegelin, Politics of the Sacred argues that participative models of politics within the structural frame of civil society are most consistent with his theory of consciousness and that religious institutions, within the limits of universal protection of religious freedom within the society and disestablishment of church institutions, are important participants in the discourse on community and the common good within civil society. Applied to Catholic social thought and contemporary engaged Buddhism, it shows how their principles and norms of peace and peacemaking, understood within the context of Voegelin's complex symbol, “consciousness-reality-language,” evolve through participation in civil society, working toward a more peaceful world. The dissertation is a personalized meditation on the relevance of the sacred to the discourse on personal and social meaning. Consistent with Voegelin's own methodology, it is transdisciplinary in that it creatively links a variety of disciplinary discourses in a reflection on the mystery of the sacred. Building on this tensional model of the sacred allows for an accounting of both historical excesses and indifference of religious institutions to societal violence, while showing how religious traditions and institutions can consciously transform themselves into peacemakers, assisting the movement of all toward a more just society. |
