| 摘要 | The mechanism used to compare the act of religious giving in Thai Buddhism and the United Church of Canada is the theory and method of religious symbols propagated by Mircea Eliade. Eliade's theory and method yields a comparison which begins with a survey of religious giving in the cosmogonic myths and sacred texts of Buddhism and Christianity. This survey reveals the many symbolic meanings of religious giving that can be used by practitioners to effect their religious experience. Next, Eliade's phenomenological categories of sacred time and sacred space become particularly useful in revealing the manner in which Thai Buddhists and United Church of Canada Protestants shape their religious experience, their sacred time and sacred space, with the act of giving. Using Eliade's theory and method in this manner allows for both a comparison of religious giving in two extremely different traditions and a comparison which reveals the changes in the symbolic meanings of religious giving from original myth to contemporary application.
