| 摘要 | Separated by some 2,500 years, the founders of poststructuralism and Buddhism have more in common than you might think. In the simultaneous pursuit of these two manifestly different traditions—one philosophical, the other spiritual—I have become aware of certain persistent parallels between them. For this thesis, I have selected the idea of self as the focal point of my investigation. My theoretical position is based in the work of Jacques Derrida and is informed by feminist encounters with his work (especially, Judith Butler). The deconstructed or decentered subject conceptualized by Derrida and Butler, as well as the path toward multiplicity theorized by both, constitute a considerable advance on the essentialist, unitary subject that is associated with modernism. Surprisingly, this deconstructed subjectivity strongly resembles the Theravada Buddhist idea of anatta or no-self. Proceeding in the manner of a dialogue between poststructuralism and Theravada Buddhism, my analysis draws the reader's attention to the degree of complementarity between them; it is in these points of convergence that each tradition is able to lend some insight into the other. In this, On the Limits of Self further attests to the value of such cross-cultural, interdisciplinary dialogues to social theory. |
