| 摘要 | This dissertation provides a critical exploration of three major themes in the traditional Buddhist discourse of Vietnam: a syncretic blending of different religious traditions, a suspicion of rationality, and a critique of the intellect as a means to achieve enlightenment. These three themes have characterized the discourse in three of the most formative texts in the Vietnamese tradition—Mouzi's Removal of Doubts (Lihuo lun), the Biographies of Eminent Chan Masters ( Thien Uyen Tap Anh), and Tran Thai Tong's Essays on Emptiness (Khoa Hu Luc)—and they continue to shape Vietnamese Buddhist discourse today. The dissertation is based on a close and careful reading of these three texts in the context of Vietnamese culture and Sino-Vietnamese relations. When these texts are compared with their Chinese sources, it is clear that the syncretistic and anti-intellectual character of Vietnamese Buddhism is largely attributable to Chinese influence. Vietnamese Buddhist thinkers inherited a Chan tendency to interpret the experience of ultimate reality as transcending language and eluding comprehension by the ordinary logical mind. From a series of 12th-century Chinese sources, Vietnamese thinkers also inherited a tendency to assert the Unity of Three Teachings (tam giao dong nguyen) and to homogenize the distinctive characteristics of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. This excessive reliance on a narrow range of Chinese sources has limited the rational and hermeneutical possibilities for Vietnamese Buddhist intellectuals, and it has made it difficult for them to take full advantage of the intellectual resources available not only in the sophisticated philosophical traditions of India and Tibet, but in the theories of rationality developed by Western thinkers such as Richard Rorty and Jürgen Habermas. This analysis of the historical sources of Vietnamese Buddhism is meant to suggest the possibility that Vietnamese Buddhism can be reoriented and renewed by bringing itself more fully into dialogue with its own rational roots in the Indian subcontinent and with the rational tradition of the West. |
