| 摘要 | Evangelical Christianity presents itself as one of the most anti-syncretistic of religious traditions. Nevertheless, despite the tradition's concern for doctrinal and behavioral purity, the conversion stories of people who enter that tradition inevitably contain elements of hybridity, of interaction and merging between the discourses of evangelical Christianity and the discourses that had informed their lives previously. This hybridity is entailed by the very nature of the multi-stranded conversations through which the conversion process moves forward. In predominantly non-Christian settings such as the one in Thailand, this interactivity and hidden hybridity help ground the global in the local, while doing so in a way that does not directly challenge the tradition's anti-syncretistic self-image of timeless and universalist purity. |
