| 摘要 | This thesis stems out of one particular music therapy session in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. Paul's Hospital when music was used for a dying patient in the presence of his parents. It explores the therapist's burning question “How do I understand ‘special moments’ attending to a dying person during the music therapy session in the ICU?” The thesis is grounded on Mindful Inquiry (Bentz & Shapiro, 1998), a research framework rooted in an integration of four knowledge traditions; phenomenology, hermeneutics, critical social science and Buddhism. In order to keep the multidimensional human voice alive, it utilizes a detailed narrative of the therapist's experience, images, music, and haiku as well as excerpts from interviews with the parents of the patient and a pastoral care worker at the hospital. It also examines the therapist's reflection in light of the fundamental Buddhist teaching, namely compassion and as well, in light of a music therapy theory The Field of Play (Kenny, 1989), particularly focusing on the notion of music therapy as ‘the field of loving and creating’ in order to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the ‘special moments’. |
