| 摘要 | This dissertation considers the nature of identity in early modern and modern Japan by examining life on the peripheries of what has been considered the dominant political order. By focusing on the extent and diversity of peripheral identities in the southwestern region of Satsuma, this dissertation argues that participants in so-called marginal groups actually formed wide-reaching networks that were alternative to and often subversive of the seemingly hegemonic order of central authorities. |
