| 摘要 | Who or what is Nietzsche's Superman? This is a question many 20 th century philosophers have asked and debated. This work compares Nietzsche's Superman, or Overman, and other aspects of his philosophy with similar concepts of Zen Buddhism, including the notion of Enlightenment. Nietzsche's philosophy requires that an individual overcome himself or herself in order to become "The Overman." Similar language describes the Zen Buddhist understanding of enlightenment as a self-overcoming. This thesis compares nine ideas and concepts of these two philosophies and demonstrates that the overlap between the two is at once intriguing, complex and surprising. These unexpected similarities leave one wondering whether Nietzsche's Ubermensch is an independent creation or, alternately, modeled on the Buddha's concept of Enlightenment. |
