| 摘要 | The nature of poetry is to reveal truths, to offer a greater understanding of humanity in all realms of experience including the religious-mystical. Theodore Roethke never claimed to be a mystic, but he did study the topic and was influenced by a succession of poets who explored mysticism in various ways. So it is understandable that his collection of poetry, "Sequence, Sometimes Metaphysical," reads as mystical poetry. Although most western critics attending to mysticism interpret the work from a Christian standpoint, the striving to move above and beyond the cycle of birth and death in poetics, whether interpreted in a Buddhist sense, or a Christian mystical sense, ultimately speaks of very similar higher truths. By contributing a Buddhist perspective on this collection of poems, this study will add new insight to the current understanding of religious mysticism as it relates to the work of a great twentieth century American poet. |
