| 摘要 | This dissertation presents a systematic treatment of the concordance of teaching in the three pita[dotbelow]ka of Theravada Buddhism whose origins date back to the time of the Buddha. Theravada tradition considers the Tipit[dotbelow]aka to be the authoritative source of the buddhavacana , the word of the Buddha. The Vinaya-Pit[dotbelow]aka , containing the traditional rules for communal life of the Buddha's disciples, gives the perspective of a life-style chosen to promote each participant's progress towards enlightenment. The Sutta-Pit[dotbelow]aka , a compendium of the Buddha's teachings in response to specific incidents, offers a view of the application of principles to widely divergent circumstances and people. The Abhidhamma-Pit[dotbelow]aka , a discourse on the true nature of reality, gives a scholarly presentation of the Buddhist concepts of nibbana (supra-mundane reality; enlightenment) and kamma , the teaching of causation and fruition. These texts manifest a concordance of worldview with respect to the cycle from birth to death, concluding the cycle in nibbana and the nature of purposeful actions that lead towards enlightenment or back to rebirth. Each pit[dotbelow]aka speaks to the causal relationship between a practitioner's progress towards enlightenment and the consistency in wholesome thought, word, and deed demonstrated. Each pit[dotbelow]aka acknowledges the approachability and attainability of enlightenment by anyone; and each allows for many paths while considering each person responsible for their own progress. The three pit[dotbelow]aka are firmly integrated and interrelated in what is arguably the sole purpose for their existence, i.e. helping practitioners make progress towards enlightenment. |
