| 摘要 | This project examines the role Bunchi, a nun of imperial descent, played in the reformulation of the relationship of Buddhist institutions to the state in Japan during the seventeenth century. Bunchi used her emphasis on strict adherence to monastic precepts to formulate a discourse counter to that produced by the new shogunate as it defined monastic practitioners through secular rules. This gave her nuns the prestige they needed to practice as legitimate members of the Buddhist establishment. Contrary to previous thinking on the Edo period, rule-based monastic practice was not an expression of subordination to the state; in the case of women, it was a means to independence and status. Bunchi's vision of Edo period nuns' practice provided a space for women to live as nuns, the convent Enshoji, that continues to function. During Bunchi's life, this gave nuns a place in the religio-political world of the time that they had not been given by the shogunate, whose rules for Buddhist institutions were directed exclusively at monks. Nuns in Buddhism are usually discussed as the objects of rules rather than as their creators and enforcers; this project contributes a portrait of female agency to the history of monastic practice in Japan. We cannot understand the relationship between court, bakufu and Buddhism without an understanding of Bunchi's work as a nun and princess with close ties to the shogunate. |
