The Old Man and the Sea brings Hemingway the highest reputation in his writing career. My thesis employs Zen spirit to analyze The Old Man and the Sea to highlight the issue of Zen cultivation and to indicate the correspondences and linkages between Santiago and Zen spirit. This thesis does not place much emphasis on the interpretation of various Buddhistic principles, but adopts some of the spirit and traits of the Zenist practice to examine Santiago’s struggle with the marlin. In a word, Santiago’s action-oriented life style is very much akin to the spirit of Zen. Chapter One provides a brief background statement of Chinese Zen Buddhism to serve as a basis for the following interpretations. Chapter Two sees the old man as a Zen cultivator in Nature. Chapter Three attempts to investigate Santiago’s daily life and state of mind in light of Zen spirit. Chapter Four tries to explain from the Zen Buddhism view how Santiago faces the fishing result in terms of Buddhist “nonattachment (不執著).” Therefore, Santiago can free the mental suffering (苦) to keep his mind in peace. Chapter Five elaborates on Santiago’s characteristics in accordance with Zen spirit. Chapter Six draws a conclusion that, to a large extent, Santiago’s life philosophy as manifested in the novel is very much of a Zen-like spirit. |
