Beneath the surface of Theravada Buddhism lies a profound undercurrent of Chinese “folk-Buddhism” elements within Thai religious culture. The influence of “folk-Buddhism” on Thai religious culture manifests itself in multiple aspects. Thailand mirrors the modern transmission and development of Chinese culture and “folk-Buddhism” in Southeast Asia. This article aims to provide new perspectives for enriching the study of Chinese Beliefs and religions in Southeast Asia. Thailand originally had a tradition of Theravada Buddhism. However, with the introduction of Chinese culture and folk beliefs, along with the establishment of Jin Nikāya (Chinese Buddhism Sect), a unique form of “folk-Buddhism” emerged in Thailand. In this article, “folk-Buddhism” refers to a distinctive religious form among Thai-Chinese, which blends orthodox Buddhist teachings with folk beliefs, representing the fusion of Buddhist doctrines and folk practices in their daily lives. Although Chinese “folk-Buddhism,” a religion grounded in lived practices, did not gain significant prominence in Thailand until the late 19th century, its influence on mainstream Thai religious culture and daily life has been profound. Considering the impact of Chinese Buddhism and folk beliefs on Thai religious culture, this article employs Daniel Overmyer’s “HTF” (History, Text, and Fieldwork) approach to religious studies. It elucidates the existence, elements, and characteristics of Chinese “folk-Buddhism” in Thailand through the lenses of popular beliefs, linguistic literature, royal religious rituals, and the identity of Chinese religious orders. Simultaneously, it analyses the reasons behind the widespread influence of Chinese “folk-Buddhism” in Thailand and reflects on its contemporary developmental changes. |
