| Abstract | Buddhism symbols at Borobudur temple area become a new phenomenon that is a commodification towards Buddhism symbols. This research aims are to describe the commodification’s form of Buddhism value at Borobudur temple area and to describe the factors causing the occurrence of Buddhism value commodification at Borobudur temple area. This research uses qualitative study approach by using case study model because in this research the researcher tries to reveal and to study also to comprehend the occurrence which is its context is unique and characterized experienced by a certain place. This research limits on a certain place at Borobudur temple area Magelang regency. The result of the study shows that commodification forms at Borobudur temple area is a phenomenon that is happened since Borobudur temple area is opened as a tourism area. Commodification happened is such as: the miniature of Borobudur temple, stupa, and Buddha’s statue. This commodification has various advantages, such as: addressing Buddhism to the world society through souvenirs that are sold and improving the people prosperity around Borobudur temple. Buddhism commodification value at Borobudur temple area actually is a part of social society phenomenon. There are some factors which cause Buddhism commodification value at Borobudur temple area, such as education level, the effect of media and globalization ideology, the development of tourism and creative industry sector, and economic. |
