One of the main reasons for the retrogression of Chobun (초분, 草墳), a secondary burial system, in Korea is the result of the incoming of both Buddhism and Confucianism into Korea. In particular, in the era of Koryeo through Three Kingdom period when Buddhism became an official religion in Korea, Chobun lost its power. This means that Chobun in Korea became a folk funeral culture from an official funeral in those periods. Further, Chobun in Choson Dynasty also encountered the power of a single burial system of Confucianism which emphasized the austerity, and Chobun was no more official culture. Nevertheless until recent days in twenty century the Chobun tradition was performed in many regions especially in southern islands in Korea. Furthermore, according to the historical records and archeological reports, Chobun tradition has been found not only in Korea, but also in many areas in the world, such as Northern Asia including Okinawa in Japan, Altaic regions, Southern China, and Southeast Asia since Neolithic period. Thus understanding how Chobun tradition has become a folk culture from an official culture in a cross-cultural context is meaningful, because it may allows us to distinguish a Korean identity on the death from others in many areas. The difference of burial systems between Chobun funeral tradition and Buddhist cremation (화장, 火葬) can be distinguished from understanding how they perceive the notion of death, especially the notion of ‘bones’ differently. The notion of bones in a Chobun tradition in Korea was closely linked to Feng Shui (풍수, 風水) which had its ground from Earth Mother Goddess (지모신, 地母神) worship. In Feng Shui (풍수, 風水) one of the significant concepts is the interaction between a ‘live energy (생기, 生氣)’ and ‘its reception (감응, 感應)’, which is only possible through the energy being transferred from bones of ancestors into their descendants. Thus Taoists in the periods in both China and Korea followed the principles of Feng Shui (풍수, 風水), and placed the significance of bones on funeral and burial systems, especially on Chobun tradition. Buddhist cremation, however, emphasized the mysticism (신이성, 神異性) of the bones of Buddha (사리, 舍利, ‘śarīra’ in Sanskrit, ‘sarīra’ in Pali) in the rather early stage that Buddhism came into both China and Korea. It was because of the fact that Buddhists met the strong resistance of Taoists. In other words, Buddhism had to overcome the existing power, Taoism, so it produced the mysticism of the bones of Buddha in order to enhance the power of it. In doing so, Buddhists adapted the mysticism of the bones of Buddha by modifying the notions of both a ‘live energy’ and ‘its reception’. In terms of |
