Summary: Contrary to the view that credits "the doctrine of Xing Ling" solely to Zhong Rong in the history of Chinese Literary criticism, the author of this paper believes that "the doctrine of Xing Ling" took shape and got to be an ideological trend throughout the Southern Dynasty. Having inherited the tradition of "the doctrine of Yuan Qing" of past dynasties, "the doctrine of Xing Ling" had, under the impact of the Buddhism doctrine of Xin Xing, gone beyond the inflexible narration of normal worldly sentiment and turned to the exploration of the heart and the spiritual world. The landscape poems of the Southern Dynasty strongly reflected the fresh advancement of the theory and opened up the new aesthetic domain of poetry characterized by a pursuit of stylistic charm and appeal. |
