| Abstract | Although it is referred to as a 'sutra in the Chinese version, this work is not a record of Sakyamuni's own teachings, but gives an account of a dialogue on Buddhist thought between Milinda (Menander),the king during the latter half of the second century B.C. of the Greeks ruling northwestern India, and an Indian monk by the name of Nagasena (Na-hsien in the title). It ends with the vows of a mendicant monk, and the work as a whole is a very valuable source of material in the study of differences between Eastern and Western thought. In the Pali Canon it is placed outside of the Tipitaka, but as a work of Buddhist literature its contents are of great importance. However, the Chinese translation differs somewhat in contents from the Pali version, and the style of translation is not exactly fluent. |
